One-Room Schoolhouses
Why do I love them? Not sure, really. But perhaps it’s because every country school I’ve ever entered has felt chock-full of the past. In 2004 and 2005, I visited several one-room schools in the Midwest in order to promote my historical novel Chig and the Second Spread, which takes place in part in a country school. This unusual promotional book tour was funded by a grant from the Loft Literary Center. You’ll find pictures below from some of the visits I made on my “One-Room Schoolhouse Tour.” If the pictures inspire you to find out more about old schoolhouses, then take a look at my annotated list of titles for children that either take place within or are about one-room schools. Click here to read “Revisiting the One-Room School,” from Book Links magazine, March 2005. And if that’s not enough, then be sure to look at the online journal of the Country School Association of America. It’s sure to send you right back in time....
Is it possible to have a favorite one-room school? In my case, it’s Honey Creek School, in rural Monroe County, IN.
Sunnyview School, at left, is located in Eau Claire, WI.
Sheldon, IA, has two lovely one-room schoolhouses. This one is Prairie Schoolhouse No. 1
